Modern Canvas Paintings

Modern canvas paintings are often seen in stately homes because they have such a powerful effect wherever they are set. The following are some tips on how to set up art pieces.

How High Should a Painting be Set?

This is often the first question asked, and the answer frequently given is 58 inches over the floor. However, this cannot always be the case. The other decorations around the wall have to be assessed as well. The location (hallway, dining room, living room etc) have to be addressed too.

Spacing Paintings

Most designers would recommend using 2/3 of the wall space for the painting. The 2/3 refers to the space between the ceiling and furniture. This setup is used for placing paintings over sofas, tables and chair groupings. Another thing you have to remember is to leave arm space behind the couch.

If you want to space the pictures tightly, space them by two inches or less. If you want modern canvas paintings with normal spacing, set the paintings apart by four to six inches. Another good option is to space the artwork by the width of your closed hand.

If prefer the museum art placement, you should set the paintings at eye level (58 inches over the floor). This is true regardless of the painting size.

If you want the modern gallery look, each art piece must have sufficient space between them. Stand in the middle of one piece and take a couple of small steps by the wall. That is where the next art piece should be centered.

How to Group Paintings

Three art pieces can be grouped and placed over large furniture. For corridor entranceways, three large paintings can be placed together. Whether the space is large or small, it is ideal to cluster small and medium sized paintings as one.

Aside from the tight grouping, the paintings should be in even numbers. Symmetrical grouping is possible only if the painting subject and size are alike.

Symmetrical collections are also suitable for placement over big furniture. The asymmetrical groupings are used for paintings with non-related subject matter. Small and large paintings with similar themes can be grouped together as well.

These recommendations for modern canvas paintings are used in many homes, but there’s no need for you to stick to them entirely. Feel free to adopt and modify the styles as is necessary. After all, what matters most is what appeals to your artistic sense.
